All Black Lives Matter. Do they to you?

Our world and specifically black communities are hurting right now. We must all start taking more of an active role in standing up for what we believe in and fighting against what we don’t. All Black Lives Matter! We need to see the human in everyone.

Racial Justice and Equality are two things that people shouldn’t have to fight for, to die for, but the reality is that they do. That we do.

So how can we work towards changing this and creating a better world? We know… that’s a very loaded question, but talking about it is a great step and leads us to take action. So please read through this with us and hear us out. We welcome your different opinions and we welcome any corrections that you’d like to share with us.

All Black Lives Matter. Do they to you? 1

We took some time away from posting about SYZYGY on our social media. As a company, we think it’s important to be able to turn off when necessary to focus our attention elsewhere. There is so much pressure that a lot of us put on ourselves to stay “current” on social media every day, reply to everything and everyone immediately, and focus on what’s right in front of us, instead of taking a step back and looking at bigger pictures.

We spend so much of our lives working… but allowing ourselves as individuals and companies to pause and reflect, learn, and serve in other areas is so important and necessary for growth. Right now Black Lives need our attention and Black Lives need our actions.

After the death of George Floyd we have been making the time to take action in other areas, signing petitions, learning who we can safely donate to, learning how we can best act, and serve during this time and continue in the future.

With the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, David McAtee, Tony McDade, Botham Jean & Atatiana Jefferson, Trayvon Martin, and countless others, we need to all come together to learn and keep taking action. This list of names doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface, but it’s part of why we and so many are angry, why we are hurt, and why we want to do our best to create change.

Our first action was to step up and LEARN! We have heard it loud and clear recently from the leadership of so many important voices in the black communities. The Black Lives Matter Movement doesn’t mean that all lives don’t matter, but that we need to be focused on black lives right now and always in the future and we agree! All lives can’t matter if black peoples lives don’t.

“Although systematic changes are needed immediately in the United States and globally – we can’t change our corrupt systems if we don’t change our own prejudice and hidden biases.”

Change starts inside of each one of us. Even though signing petitions, donating, and circulating resources with family and friends is a great start – we can’t let it end there.

Here at SYZYGY we believe in the alignment of our mind, body, and world. We are all feeling something right now in a very crucial moment in history. Everyone has their own way of expressing what they feel, but sometimes we think it’s important to pause and really ask ourselves:

  • What are we feeling? Is it fear, anger, compassion, confusion, guilt, sadness, love?

  • Can you identify where you are feeling those emotions? Close your eyes and really try to feel it in your body.

  • Is it in your breath that you feel angry? Does the beating of your heart feel stronger? Are you fighting back tears because it’s overwhelming? Or do you feel inspired?

Sit in your own feelings for a few moments and try to understand how your mind and body are processing your emotions/thoughts and where they are coming from.

*Breathe In* and *Breathe Out* let your breath flow through you, welcome all of your thoughts, and try to isolate them so that you can better understand them. If you’re not used to taking these mindful moments to yourself, this might take you longer to connect with your breath and your inner voice. Are there words that are coming forward as you’re trying to focus internally? Pay attention to them.

Now take a moment and try to step into someone else’s feelings. What if your son, husband, friend, father, or brother was just murdered? *Go Ahead* really try to imagine that. Your son, husband, friend, father, or brother was just murdered and you had to watch him take his last breaths, calling out your name while he was dying, while the rest of the world watched with you.

*Try to really feel* those emotions, try to understand and sympathize with those who have to go through this over and over again. Try to understand where their anger comes from, instead of judging.

Although systematic changes are needed immediately in the United States and globally – we can’t change our corrupt systems if we don’t change our own prejudice and hidden biases. We need to start seeing the human in everyone, no matter what color their skin is.

We all have power and it’s time for us to use it. No more black people being shot and killed. No more police brutality. No more police officers getting away with murder. There needs to be a huge shift in the way law enforcement and the police departments are funded.

We need to show ourselves and others compassion and grace while we work towards a new path to a better freedom.

It’s easier to sit behind keyboards and judge than to stand up and make a change. So don’t let yourself be consumed by all of the negativity, turn it into positivity and make changes. We can’t turn away because it’s uncomfortable. Black lives matter!

As MLK said, “ Hatred cannot drive out hatred, only love can do that.”

We would like to start using our platform to create positive change and support black lives. We will be rolling out some new ways for SYZYGY to make more of an impact in the next few weeks. But while we work towards those goals we have gathered lists of racial justice organizations, educators, black-owned businesses, restaurants, podcasts, and more! Let’s invest in them, learn from them, support them, and follow them.

It’s time to make sure this is a movement and not just a moment! We’re all in this together.

Please know that we have been trying to do our best research on the below lists. We realize that everyone has different opinions and we welcome those. If you feel any of the below shouldn’t be on our lists, please reach out and let us know why. We WANT to learn more and make the best decisions and support the right people.

  1. Thank you for the kind feedback Brandy! We’re glad this resinated with you and definitely feel like it’s helpful for people to pause and show compassion towards others instead of judging. Perspective is so important!

  2. Really love how you brought up sympathizing with other people and imagining what it would be like to be in someone else’s shoes. I feel like we all get so caught up in our day to day life that we don’t take the time to feel someone else’s pain. It definitely made it more real for me.
